Shadows and Light

This photo got so many comments on my Wordless Wednesday post on Out of the Lotus, I thought I'd post it here. I often don't know which images will elicit interest, but this one did. People are responding to the texture, the shadows and light, the patterns, and the image's invitation to take a seat at the table.

Of course, when I look at it, I see how I could have framed it better. Oh well. I'm glad people like it, but I wish I could go back to North Carolina and rephotograph the scene. Move the furniture around and see what I get.

Taken of a friend leaning out her window, @ 1981.

This photo was shot around 1980, and is the backyard of a friend in Pacific Grove, CA. I don't know why the image intrigued me so, but it did, and all these years later still does. I shot black & white infrared film almost exclusively for a couple of years. I loved the effect. The photos are grainy and remind me of pencil sketches.

what a handsome girl she is....i snapped this while N. was holding out some food to her - hence the very interested look. i took it on a diagonal, so I reoriented it, which left me with the orange corners, which I like, so I kept.

There is something about this scene that I wanted to capture. I'm not sure I did. By leaving out the bushes in the foreground, I've lost some of that sense of "peeking in" at the house. But there's something compelling about the house itself that I was trying to focus on in my photoshopping. I'm going to keep working on this...try and capture all the ideas that were going on in my head.

Original image on bottom, enhanced image on top. Lots of lasso work, capturing plants and changing their colors, lassoing parts of the wood planter boxes and 'wrapping in plastic' and general saturation and contrast work.

Canon Rebel XT -- Experimentation

Experimenting with the new camera -- wow are the images clear and sharp (unless otherwise manipulated). Just getting used to the basic automatic controls before moving on to advanced and manual settings. Interesting lens filter affect. Will work in a few carefully selected situations. So much to learn, even for this old photog.

I admit it. I'm hooked on digital photography and Photoshop. Currently I am using a simple point and shoot, Kodak Easy Share. Soon I hope to have a Nikon D70 with 18mm-50mm, and 55mm-200mm lenses (drool....).

I'm an old school photographer (yanno, color and black and white film), B.A. in Art, whose Bessler 23c enlarger is languishing in a friend's studio miles away from my home. Along with all the other darkroom equipment. I have over the years attempted to resurrect my photo work. Given the expense, the distance to my darkroom, and my busy life as a worker-bee, mother, and domestic goddess, I have dropped the photo as an important part of my expressive life.

Enter digital photography and photoshop. Self-taught, and drawing on past photographic experience, I have been delighted with the technology. I have created this blog to share work and invite conversation about the work and the process.
